McCourt: 20 excellent reasons why students should vote in the primary

This Tuesday the 19th is the New York state primary, and your vote is as needed as much as the hug my dad never gave me.

I’m urging you to skedaddle on down to your polling place and make your voice heard, because if you don’t, everyone else will. And some people’s voices are really annoying. They remind me of my old algebra teacher. After she asked me to close the door, she gave me detention for being out of my seat. That doesn’t make sense. She asked me to close the door!

Anyway, every vote counts, so here are 20 reasons why you should cast yours:

  1. Voting is the most direct way to influence our democracy …
  2. … unless you’re a big-pocket billionaire. But since we’re all broke, voting’s the next best thing.
  3. You can grab Chipotle afterwards.
  4. The voting booths are a great place to meet singles.
  5. You get a free sticker out of it.
  6. It’ll really grind ISIS’s gears.
  7. You can vote. Justin Bieber can’t. Now tell me that doesn’t feel good.
  8. You can still listen to Bieber’s music on your way there. No one will know.
  9. How cool will it be to be able to say you voted in the last presidential election of the former United States?
  10. You can’t ramble and rave about “Hamilton” for four months and then not participate in the system he fought for.
  11. If Hillary loses, her head will explode.
  12. If Hillary wins, her head will explode.
  13. You will actually have done something your parents can be proud of.
  14. You’ll actually have gone more than two miles from campus. What is this place?
  15. It’s Tuesday. You don’t have plans.
  16. You didn’t plan on writing that paper anyway.
  17. No, seriously I know you haven’t even started that paper. You watched “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” for two hours with a box of goldfish as your couch buddy. Don’t fight me on this.
  18. The people-watching is like Discovery Channel: awesome, but slightly terrifying.
  19. Hate all of the candidates? Write my name in.
  20. That would be really cool. Do that.
