John Gillon transferred to SU to have a chance to play in the NCAA Tournament. He'll have to settle for the NIT instead.

UPDATED: March 14 at 2:45 p.m.

No. 1 seed Syracuse (18-14, 10-8 Atlantic Coast) starts off its National Invitation Tournament run against eighth-seeded UNC-Greensboro (25-9, 14-4 Southern) on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.

Here’s how The Daily Orange beat writers think the game will unfold:

Connor Grossman (19-13)
Daycation
Syracuse 79, UNC-Greensboro 71

Only days after Jim Boeheim indirectly removed himself from Greenboro’s mayoral race, the veteran head coach is rewarded with a ridiculously ironic matchup in the first round of the NIT. This is a game and tournament Syracuse wanted no part of, but so long as SU’s playing in the Carrier Dome, it will be business as usual. If there’s any silver lining, Orange fans get a chance to see Tyler Lydon play at home again before he makes a decision on his NBA future.

Matt Schneidman (14-18)
Troll job
Syracuse 81, UNC-Greensboro 60

First off, it is absolutely hysterical that UNC-Greensboro is flying to Syracuse after Jim Boeheim’s “no value” comments. I’m sure the 72-year-old is having a good laugh about the pairing, as much as he will after the game when Syracuse cruises into the second round. It may not be the NCAA Tournament, but the Orange still wants to win, and it won’t have a problem doing so on Wednesday

Paul Schwedelson (20-12)
Nothing but business
Syracuse 79, UNC-Greensboro 58

This game will only be fun because Jim Boeheim trashed Greensboro after Syracuse lost in its first ACC tournament game. Other than that, the Orange will trounce the Spartans. UNCG won nine straight before its loss in the Southern Conference championship game, but count on SU playing well because the game will be played in the Carrier Dome, where Syracuse is 16-3 this season.
