Syracuse (4-7, 1-3 Atlantic Coast) swept Navy (11-9, 0-1 Patriot) 7-0 on Tuesday, in Lakeland, Florida. The Orange won the doubles point for only the second time in 11 tries this season.
Syracuse took the point by winning first and second doubles. In No. 1 doubles, sophomore Gabriela Knutson and freshman Miranda Ramirez partnered to a 6-4 victory over Navy’s Claudia Mackenzie and Emily Louie-Meadors. SU’s second doubles ended with the same 6-4 score, with Anna Shkudun and Dina Hegab defeating Navy’s Rozel Hernandez and Carlee Conway. Syracuse couldn’t sweep doubles, as Navy’s Amanda Keller and Kaylah Hodge defeated the Orange’s third doubles pairing, Maria Tritou and Nicole Mitchell, 7-5.
In third singles, Knutson breezed past Josie Rogers, 6-0, 6-1. Tritou defeated last week’s Patriot League Player of the Week, freshman Ansofi Wreder, 6-4, 6-2, in fourth singles. Fifth and sixth singles both went to tiebreaks. SU’s Libi Mesh defeated Louie-Meadors, 2-6, 7-5, 10-7, and Hegab defeated Conway in sixth singles 6-3, 3-6, 10-5.
Syracuse’s Shkudun had started 2017 with an 0-4 record in singles, but emerged victorious in No. 1 singles today over Navy’s Keller, 0-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Ramirez improved to 9-1 in singles play. Ramirez, who has not lost since Jan. 22 against Columbia, defeated Navy’s Mackenzie in second singles, 6-2, 6-2.
